True Health
by Alex Thompson
In my life I like to make a big distinction between health and fitness. Fitness for us is how many miles at a decent pace can we put together week after week. Interesting stuff but let’s leave it to one side. I like to define health broadly as feeling good on the inside.
All animals are healthiest when they are left to do what is natural to them. Leave a tiger free from interference and he’ll get along just fine. Humans are the same, except that in our society we’ve lost touch with what it is natural to us. If only we did what we were bred to do, we’d be healthy and happy. Have you ever seen a depressed tiger in the wild? The reason for our position is because we live in an age where machines do most of our work for us, leaving us huge voids. Without sounding like a new age hippy, we need to try and live in the way which is natural to us. That is true health, it takes care of itself.
Diet
Diet is possibly the most removed aspect of our lives from our natural state, which is why most of our health problems are diet related. We do not grow our food, and there is such abundance of food we can gorge ourselves on a few food stuffs, and neglect whole other groups. All the food we could want is in one building and we have no idea what to eat or how much. In my supermarket there are two aisles for meat and dairy, one for cereal, one for chocolate, one for crisps, one for sweets and one for cakes. I’m guessing that reflects the balance of food stuffs in the average person’s diet; shocking! In our natural world we would eat whatever we had onto hand and in the proportions we had available. That would have been not only the sole diet for us but the best one -- a healthy diet was non-negotiable!
Eating healthy means eating natural foods as much as possible. Avoid food which only exists as a result of industrialization. The only thing I buy on a regular basis which has more than one ingredient are the salted peanuts, which have less salt than the low salt baked beans!
Exploration
Humans are naturally inquisitive. We like to find stuff out, and we naturally do it to the limits of our abilities. The really smart people like physics and chemical biology; for me, I’m happy with Michael Moore books and documentaries. Flex your head, it’s what we were designed to do!
Communication
Most animals communicate between themselves. We are no different, we go to great lengths to keep in touch with people and to get our voices out. This website is testament to that! Keep time in your life for sitting down and shooting the shit with your buddies. Don’t worry about lack of maximizing productivity; life isn’t about that. Besides, if you’re content and healthy, you’ll live longer so you can always “do it later!”
Enjoy Your Sport
Because we will still have some time left over due to the workings of modernity, why not do triathlon? I sure as hell enjoy it! Remember though, humans are naturally a low intensity endurance animal. The average person would struggle to run a mile in much under 10 minutes and goes to great and successful lengths to avoid those 10 minutes of activity, but wouldn’t think much of walking around for eight hours in a shopping center or Disneyland. To me this shows that while we can develop our bodies, our default setting is much different. Being better at triathlon doesn’t make you healthier, enjoying it does.
